Insights From The Infected
Feb 7th
- Ice Chips = Nectar. After you have purged your body of every potential liquid, from every orifice, ice chips are the nectar of the gods. So cool. So refreshing. So non-vomit inducing.
- Lie Down, Anywhere. If you are wandering around the house and feel the need to lie down … do so. On the floor. On concrete. On tile. Doesn’t matter. When you are sick the pleasure of lying down far outweighs the discomfort of what you might be lying down on.
- BRAT is a lie. Carmen told me to do BRAT (bannanas, rice, applesauce, toast) to ease back into eating without risk of relapse. I ate the Bananna and threw up. Not what they intended I suspect. I have never liked bananas. This seals it for me.
- Hurling = Healing. At least for adults. Jace keeps hurling and then seeming fine for 3-4 hours then he hurls again. I couldn’t hurl for the life of me till the bananas mentioned above. However, once I did hurl things began improving for me so maybe the BRAT model did work.
- Don’t Change Clothes. Why should you. You’ll just sweat/stain those up as well. Plus you get the added benefit of grossing out the healthy people that remain in the house. Sick people need some amusement.
- Hurl Volume Isn’t Related to Body Size. Jace set the record for the family (still not broken) for amount of hurl produced on his first go. It was impressive. Required a hefty trashbag to gather it all up.
- Nightlife. For some strange reason most of the hurling occurs from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. For example, on Friday night, Jace was puking every 30 minutes from 1 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Not sure where he kept getting stuff to hurl but I can attest that he did.
BauerFive now integrated to Facebook?
Jan 30th
So I have been tinkering with different ways of integrating to facebook content posted on BauerFive. Specifically how to get it ‘nicely’ onto FB as a status update when on of us (typically Pax, Bry or me) post.
I didn’t like the method of posting it as a note to FB as that breaks the link back to the blog which often has more content than FB (embedded videos, etc) and better layout. So I tried a wordpress plugin (thats what runs the blog) last week that worked pretty good but it only could post to one FB account and had no filters (we want to be able to post posts by author A to author A’s FB account).
So, when stuck … go manual. Now we will post and then ’share’ the post to FB via the FB connect plugin. FB readers can login to the site w/ their FB credentials and then comment (comment on the site or comment on FB doesn’t matter) as long as you leave the default “post to your FB” checked.
People can also now share blog posts in a fuller form than a comment by hitting ’share’.
Well see if this really adds works out in the long run.
GOP or DEM – Obama’s talk @ the GOP retreat bear pondering
Jan 30th
Watching a snippet of Obama’s talk w/ the GOP above from this web page:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/32225.html
I think all citizens have to agree with his recent message to both the GOP and the DEM party … the US Citizens want debate to focus on building consensus not on how to box in and/or paint the other party as idiots. How true.
I fancy myself an independant. I read GOP and DEM biased blogs. Each have the same poison running through their writings. So little of what Obama recommends like in this snippet:
“It can’t be all or nothing, one way or the other … If we put together a stimulus package in which a third of it is tax cuts that normally you guys would support, and support for states and the unemployed and helping people stay on COBRA, that certainly your governors would support … and maybe there are some things in there, with respect to infrastructure, that you don’t like … If there’s uniform opposition because the Republican caucus doesn’t get 100 percent or 80 percent of what you want, then it’s going to be difficult to get a deal done, because that’s not how democracy works.”
A message he took to the DEMS as well when they initially (Pelosi) vomited on supporting his recommendation for a spending freeze on ALL government discretionary spending.
GOP or DEM backer … this president is one of the best I have seen when he is stirring the Populist faction … and it looks like he is moving that direction. Looks like an interesting 2010 lies ahead.

The Blob – Alive?
Jan 21st
First the drama, check out this drop of oil that seems to be alive and sentient (navigates a maze):

In reality its a scientific study of how PH gradients can be used to deliver treatment (drugs) within the body (or other ideas). Rather cool if you ask me. Link here:

Plastic Bottle Boat Design
Jan 18th
Last Friday (1/15/2010) I was voted to become captain of a boat made of Milk Cartons that my group and I had created in science. The “boat” strongly resembled a raft and my job was to paddle it with one paddle across the expance of the high school indoor pool. I was slightly less than willing to drive the raft but I did it anyway because our teams only person who had any exp. on water with paddles.
So that morning at 8:30 I was on the water paddling for my life. My raft did not seem to want to go straight as it turned in either direction each time I paddled on the opposite side. But despite this I had a decent time and got 16th place out of 60 boats. Sadly this was not enough to get me into the semi- finals so I had to sit out the rest of the boat race. During this time I discussed why my boat didn’t work with my Father. He told me I should have been leaning farther forward in order to keep me going straight.
I have now thought over the boat race for three days and have come to a conclusion. Instead of having a square raft we should have build a canoe type boat similair to the picture on the left. (Without the Viking decorations) I think this would be better as canoes skim ontop of the water and move even with the slightest force. My raft needed to be pushed forward with exetreme force to even move a few feet. I also believe this because the winning boat was a canoe. 2nd place was a very small raft, and 3rd was a huge raft with a huge rower.
So my final design if I could redo the boat would be a canoe, maybe a few minor changes too but that is my decision!
Linkage of Humanity and Science – Mirror Neurons
Jan 13th
So, what was it that created the explosion of man 100k years ago? Scientists have one suggestion – the emergence of mirror neurons. In short, the human brain evolved to not only have neurons that drove your experience/movement … but also that a subset would fire if you saw others doing/experiencing that thing. Rather deep … but validated by brain observations via probes.
Worth watching. Just 10 minutes. Here is the video (my notes below)
*** NOTES TAKEN WHILE VIEWING ***
0:7.430 – Overview
0:43.684 – Study differences via lesions or probes
1:35.775 – Motor command neurons fire … if you are doing something … or if someone is doing it
○ Enables imitation (by taking point of view of other person)
2:38.783 – 100k years ago rapid expansion of human mind
○ Nueron mirror system? Ability to imitate?
○ Allows learnings to spreads and be retained
○ Unlike darwin models … watch parents … learn … new 100k years ago
4:14.987 – Touch neurons
○ Again mirror – empathy?
○ Numb arm, watch you touch … will then feel it in your arm when someone else is touched
○ Eastern philosphy on everyone being connected ties to this (you feel what others around you feel)
6:26.793 – Science and Humanities
○ The mirror nueron system is where science and humanity join
The Leviathan Book Review
Jan 10th

The Leviathan is a book I read recently in my English class, and I was extremely impressed with how good it was. It had a slow start but then got much better as the book went on.
The book is based in 1914, during World War I, but with one slight change to history. Instead of having the Axis, and the Allies. The Clankers and the Darwinist replace them. The Clankers put all of their faith in machinery while the Darwinist use only mutated animals they evolved into War Machines. The machines are extremely outnumbered, but they may have a few tricks up their sleeves.
But while all this is happening Alex, the Prince of an Empire that is falling apart, is forced to flee his home for the only neutral state left. Sweden. In England however, a young girl posing as a boy join the air-force and lands on the giant airship, the leviathan as a midshipman. I strongly recommend this book to all readers 7 and up. Have fun reading!
